How to
Start a Small Online Business

Most likely the information you see here about how to start a small online business isn't the first you've come across. Chances are you have been subjected to about a million things and it still doesn't make sense.

Well, I'm here to tell you that most informational articles today lack one or two important pieces to the puzzle. Heck, I've even done it over the years, but if no one made mistakes there wouldn't be anything to learn.

Today I want to go over some of the things that are often overlooked. Forget about the information like; "Hey, find a niche, grab some good web hosting, learn to promote and stick to a schedule." I know I've heard it so many times I roll my eyes anymore, and I know some individuals need it so I can't knock it too much. Like I said before, even I've written about the same thing and published it to the Internet.

However, have you considered all the other things that go into how to start a small online business? Will you truly be able to do this all by yourself? Will you be hiring employees or outsourcing your work? Do you have any idea how to do your taxes at the end of the year for a small online business? There are many questions like this, but I don't want to overwhelm you. So let's just go over a couple of basics that most people don't talk about extensively.

Employees and Outsourcing

How big is your business going to be? This is something to seriously consider when asking how to start a small online business, even if it's going to be down the road. After all, this will heavily depend on what type of business you plan on investing your time and money with from now on. Whatever the case may be you have to plan for this so you can make it a part of your overall budget.

The best avenue to take here is going ahead and start your research now. This way when it comes time to actually utilize it you will be ready. The outsourcing might pertain to someone running your website, hiring freelance writers for article marketing, forum posters, or several other scenarios. In the end you definitely want a return on your money.

Taxes and Legal Obligations

So many times I have come across small online businesses that don't do their taxes or keep up with their legal obligations. This is a BIG no-no, and you should always make sure you are well informed. After all, did you know you can write-off part of your electric, travel expenses, cell phone and Internet bills when you own a small online business?

You will also have to check all the zoning laws and business licensing requirements in your area. Oh, and don't forget to call the IRS and get a tax ID number. Even if you don't see yourself making a ton of money the first few years you should still get one. It will keep you out of trouble, especially if you really don't want to be audited.

So How do You Start?

Okay, what I'm trying to get at today is you just have to prepare. Yes, you need to find a particular niche to get involved in, but you have to do plenty of research before you get started. You also have to do everything else that I was kind of taking a stab at earlier regarding the web hosting, building a website, learning to promote, etc. Learning how to start a small online business is a process.

In the end though, it all begins with proper organizational skills and planning everything out. So if you truly are ready to learn how to start a small online business, take the time to write everything out. It will be like a checklist and when you finish something you will definitely feel the accomplishment.
