Find Your Niche

To find your niche is the most important step in starting your online home based business. It is the cornerstone of the foundation of your online adventure.

Remember that your business should be based on something you know and love. You don't have to know everything about your niche, but you should be ready to learn all you can.

Writing from your own knowledge using your own unique voice can market to your niche more effectively than the big companies. That is your advantage, your edge, in niche marketing.

Writing content pages and articles is hard enough when you have a passion for your subject. Choosing something you are not genuinely interested in will show through your writing and will not inspire trust and confidence from your visitors.

So how do you find your niche?

Start by writing down everything that comes to mind, anything which interests you. Don't try to judge whether ideas are good or profitable, just write them down. Let the ideas flow freely. Write down as many as you can.

It is a good idea to spend several days thinking about this. Don't rush. You will be living with your final selection for a long time.

After you finish with the ideas which come to mind, think about:

  • your hobbies
  • what you do in your spare time
  • what you have learned at your job and any former jobs
  • what books and magazines do you read
  • what do you talk with your friends about
  • what do others ask your advice about
  • what problems have you helped others solve
  • what problems would you like to help others solve
  • what are you interested in learning more about
  • what classes have you taken or want to
Write those down too.

From time-to-time over the next week think about which excite you the most. After a week or so try to narrow your list down to the 5 most interesting topics to you.

Once you have your list pared down to the top 5, it will be time to do a bit of research to find your niche; which will be the best choice for you.
