Choosing Your Domain Name

If you really want to make money online then you have to have your own site. As part of your site you need to have your own domain name. But you shouldn’t just pick any domain name. You want a domain name that will help you succeed. Here’s what you need to do when choosing your domain name.

Years ago you could think up pretty much any domain name and it would probably be available. Now, you need to take some time to actually search for an available name. The Internet is packed with other site owners who’ve taken most of the good names. So, be prepared to run through a lot of different potential domain names before you actually find one that’s available.

Found my domain name!

One cool feature that most domain registries offer is similar names. So you might decide to choose a name like loseweightfast.com but that isn’t available. So, you will get suggestions with different endings (.org, .biz, etc) and different variations of the words.

But the very first thing you have to do when choosing your domain name is identify your niche. Then you want to find a keyword phrase that’s very popular within your niche. This is a phrase that is searched for over and over every single day. Although it's not as important as it used to be, including these words in your domain name will help you rank well with the search engines when those words are searched for.

Then you also want a domain that will stand out and stick with potential visitors. So write down a few keywords you want to target and think about different variations that might stick out in people’s minds. Then go and search and see what’s available.

At some point you’ll have to make a decision if you definitely want a .com ending or if you’re okay with a .org or even a .biz ending. You might be able to get a better domain name if it ends in .biz but you will be sacrificing some credibility and the ability to stick in people’s minds (since people usually use .com).

If possible you want to try to limit you domain name to three words or less. The easier it is to type it or even remember it, the better your site will do. For example, “iwanttoloselotsofweightreallyreallyfast” might be available, and it includes some great keywords, but it’s much too long.

When you are sure of your choice it will be time for your domain name registration. For cheap domain names I use NameCheap or GoDaddy.

When choosing your domain name you want to consider your niche, you want to find important keywords to target, and then you want to see what’s available. You also want to keep the domain name relevant and as short as possible. If you do all these things then you will have a very good domain name.
